23 Feb 2011: Pirtek Showing Sustained Growth

OVER the past five years Pirtek Cape Town has grown considerably and has become a leading supplier of both standard and specialised hoses and fittings and adaptors, related valves, pumps as well as the installation of steel tubing to the maritime industry.

"Our trained technicians are equipped to deal with most of the difficulties that hydraulics poses in the unforgiving industry. Our class hoses carry Lloyds DNV and ABS certification which is often a requirement on larger vessels," says director Wayne Voigt. Pirtek carries and has access to a large assortment of hose and fittings in South Africa.

Voigt says Pirtek is able to obtain a large variety of stainless steel fittings at very short notice - five days if not in stock. "We understand clearly that a ship, trawler or oil rig do not earn money tied up at a quay and hence with our ability to work in close proximity to the vessel we reduce down-time and are able to make up hoses to specific specifications."

Pirtek can produce a range of hoses which are used in the diving industry which are crush proof down to 6 000 metres below sea level. Pirtek has just launched its new range of light weight very flexible hoses in both two wire and four wire format. The flexibility allows for tighter bend radiuses which is always tricky on ships with their confined spaces.

"We have the facility to pressure test our hoses and are able to supply certification as well as being able to pellet them to make sure they are 100% clean. We have a large selection of both non- conductive hoses as well as arimid (Kevlar) braid hoses which can be used in sea water without the worry of rusting steel wire normally associated with conventional hydraulic hose. We have become popular with refurbishments as well as emergency repairs, Voigt says.

A mobile workshop can crimp hoses on site. Also, Pirtek's services are available round-the-clock, everyday of the year.

Parker Tracking System Surpasses 1,000,000 Tagged Hose Assemblies Around The World

The Parker Tracking System (PTS) from Parker Hannifin Corporation, the global leader in motion and control technologies, has gained rapid acceptance since its launch just over one year ago.

The system now manages more than 1,000,000 uniquely identified hydraulic hose assemblies within its global database. Using this tagging and identification system helps Parker's customers identify, track and replace hose assemblies with greater speed, accuracy and ease than previously possible.

"With PTS, our global OEMs and distributors can identify and replace hose assemblies with nothing more than the 8-digit alphanumeric code on the PTS label - which is a significant change in the way we can service our customers," said Bill Sayavich, Business Development Manager, Parker Hannifin Corporation, Hose Products Division. "Customers can simply call ahead with the PTS ID number, giving their distributor advance notice and time to retrieve the assembly details from the system, including hose and fitting part numbers, assembly length, optional sleeving and accessories. With this detail in hand, the distributor can make the assembly and have it ready for pick-up when the customer arrives."

"With more than 18 countries represented, this is truly a global system," Sayavich said. "The same hose that is tagged by a distributor in Germany, for example, can be replaced in the United States, and vice versa. With so much equipment being shipped all over the world these days, our global database enables Parker's OEM customers to facilitate hydraulic hose replacement on their equipment, regardless of the country of origin. Equally important, the system can record specialized information such as pressure tests, certifications or even engineering drawings, as well as the ability to keep track of maintenance cycles for replacing old assemblies."
